December 2016 – Gardening Tips

Holiday Magnolia Wreath

Materials:

  • Dry foam sheet large enough to cut out in shape of round wreath.
  • 3 to 4 inch magnolia stems
  • Holly berries on stems
  • Carving knife
  • Garden clippers

Instructions:

1. Use large bowl and smaller object to form outter and inner circles of wreath.
2. Cut foam using sharp carving knife.
3. Trim tips of magnolia stems into points for easy insertion into foam.
4. Insert magnolia stems into side of foam on a flat angle leaning in the same direction around the upper edge of the wreath form. Continue until the sides are covered generously.
5. Cover the front of the form with magnolia stems in the same fashion with leaves pointed in the same direction.
6. Fill in any blank spots with more stems or any loose leaves with long stems.
7. Add berry stems for accent.

Wreath may be embellished with other types of berries, flowers or shrubs. Use as table decoration or hang as wreath. Spray entire wreath with water once or 2 times a day to keep fresh. Wreath will last about a week. For a longer lived wreath, use oasis foam on a plastic wreath form to protect surfaces. Oasis will absorb and hold water. (Soak oasis foam completely before use). Artificial wreaths can be made using Styrofoam and plastic magnolia stems and berries.
